Main stream or substream for live viewing?

The short answer

Use the lowest-load profile that still shows the detail you need. Compare moving scenes because a small preview and a full-screen view have different requirements.

Work through the checks

  1. Copy the RTSP path from the documentation for the exact product family. Keep the address, service port, channel and main/substream selector as separate values during diagnosis.

  2. Use ONVIF-reported media profiles where available, and record the selected profile token. Profiles can differ in resolution, codec, audio and PTZ associations.

  3. Compare the main stream and a camera-provided substream at the same time of day. The substream often reduces decoding load, but confirm that the detail you need remains visible.

  4. Observe CPU, GPU, memory and network use in Windows Task Manager with one view, then add views gradually. Record the point where playback begins to lag.

What to verify

Show a visible changing clock or a supervised movement in the camera scene, then compare it with the live image. Use the same source and layout for each latency comparison.
